    Daily Round Up

    By Eric Sedler | August 16, 2007

    Good Afternoon Red Jersey.

    In today’s Round Up:

    1. Why a Zogby Poll can not be taken seriously
    2. Debate time in the 14th
    3. Seema Singh and Linda Greenstein pull out the diversity card, sort of
    4. Frank Lautenberg is so old that he calls walking from his car to the Senate floor door to door campaigning
    5. Chris Smith wins Environmental Award
    6. The Snowman strikes back at Romney

    State & Local News:

Quite an interesting Poll: According to a Zogby Poll commissioned by Garden State Equality 63% of New Jersey voters polled said that they would have no problem if public officials in New Jersey come to the conclusion that civil unions for gay couples have worked to provide equality under the law and granted gay couples the right to marry. 48.1% agreed with the statement that “New Jersey should give gay couples the same freedom to marry as heterosexual couples. 44.6% disagreed. But when the same question was phrased dirrently a small majority of respondents were against gay marriage by a margin of 49.1% to 47.5%. To this I would say…put it to a ballot question: Let the voters decide. Assemblyman Mike Doherty seems to agree in this press release.

Same Poll: Wierd Results: According to the same Zogby poll Senate President Codey has a 65-20 percent approval rating while Governor Corzine has much better numbers than he usually does at 64-27. Frank Lautenberg has 56-30 percent approval rating and Bob Menendez has a 45-35 approval rating. Anyone else think this poll was really done wrong? See our first story in National News why I think this poll can not be taken seriously.

The New 4th District Candidates: Gloucester Township Councilwoman Shelley Lovett will now be the State Senate Candidate in the 4th District with Agnes Gardiner and Patricia Fratticcioli running for the Assembly. They are facing quite the uphill battle against Democrats Fred Madden, Paul “Taxpayers pay for my gas” Moriarty and newcomer Sandra Love.

14th District Debate ON!: Assemblywoman and winner of Red Jersey’s Most Confusing Legislator Award Linda Greenstein and her running mate Wayne DeAngelo issued a call to Republican opponents Tom Goodwin and Adam Bushman for two clean elections debates in October. 2 and a half hours later Tom Goodwin and Adam Bushman accept the debates and reminded Singh, Greenstein, and DeAngelo to sign the Clean Elections Campaign Pledge.

Battle of the Endorsements in the 14th as well: Seema Singh and Linda Greenstein flaunt their Women Advocating Good Government endorsement while Assemblyman Bill Baroni gets union endorsement Number 1 million. Funny thing about Singh and Greenstein’s endorsement: “WAGG is a bi-partisan coalition of progressive women focused on electing women to the Legislature..” Well I think that may be quite the handicap considering the 14th Republican candidates are all men. “Our Legislature should be as diverse as the state that we live in both in gender and ethnicity,” said Singh. The diversity card is coming out in the 14th…who didn’t see that one coming?

    National News

Frank Lautenberg is so old, he forgot he’s even running for Senate: A Rutgers-Eagleton poll released today confirmed what another survey said last month: New Jersey voters think Sen. Frank Lautenberg is too old to effectively serve another term. Sixty-one percent of respondents said that Lautenberg’s age will hurt his ability to represent New Jersey during another term, which he would start at the age 84 and finish at 90. Thirty-one percent of those surveyed said that the senator’s age would not be an impediment. The Rutgers-Eagleton poll also said that only 24 percent of registered voters think that Lautenberg deserves another term, while 61 percent said it’s “time for a change.” Lautenberg’s favorability rating in the poll is positive, 38 to 25 percent. 37 percent approve of the way Lautenberg is handling his job as Senator, while 32 percent disapprove. Bob Menendez’s numbers are lower, with 29 percent approving and 36 percent disapproving.

Someone send this article to Carol Gay and Amy Vasquez: At a small ceremony in Windward Beach Park, on the banks of the river, Environment New Jersey thanked Congressman Chris Smith for voting for the environment 100 percent of the time during 2005 and 2006. Group members commended New Jersey’s entire congressional delegation for acting as “environmental heroes” on Capitol Hill, while they presented Smith with a blue T-shirt bearing the organization’s logo. Just behind them, the waters of the Metedeconk glistened under the afternoon sun. And a large sign proclaimed “beach closed” — the result of high bacteria levels in the river. “It does underscore our ongoing problems,” Smith said, after noting the irony of the situation. He added that he remains committed to cleaning up Wreck Pond, the body of water that lies along the Spring Lake-Sea Girt boundary and whose discharges he said are responsible for 80 percent to 90 percent of beach closings every year.

Video Snowman vs. Romney part two: Watch as the video snowman takes on Mitt Romney. For anyone wondering, the YouTube Debate for Republicans is now taking place some time in November with Rudy Giuliani and John McCain as the only two confirmed candidates.

That’s it for the Round Up Today.
